Venous Ulcers
Vein Treatment
What are Venous Ulcers and Chronic Wounds?
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) happens when the veins in your legs can’t return blood to your heart properly. This causes blood to pool, increasing pressure in the veins and damaging nearby tissue. One serious result of CVI is venous ulcers.
Venous ulcers, also called stasis ulcers, are long-lasting wounds that usually appear near the ankles. They form due to high pressure in the veins, which leads to fluid buildup, swelling, and skin breakdown. These wounds can be painful, leak fluid, heal slowly, and are prone to infection.
These ulcers are more than a skin issue—they’re a sign of advanced vein disease. They can limit your movement, cause chronic pain, and affect your quality of life. Healing requires proper wound care, compression therapy, and treating the underlying vein problem.
If not treated early, venous ulcers can become chronic, lasting months or years and leading to serious infections. Early care is important to prevent complications.
Not all ulcers are venous. Arterial ulcers come from poor blood flow and often appear on the toes or feet. They usually have a round, punched-out look and are painful. Diabetic ulcers are caused by nerve and circulation issues and often form on the soles of the feet. Since each type of ulcer is different, an accurate diagnosis is important for proper treatment.
Treatment Options for Venous Ulcers
At Vanish, we treat both the ulcer and the vein problem that causes it. Our providers offer gentle, non-surgical treatments to fix the damaged veins and reduce pressure in the legs. These include procedures like radiofrequency ablation or sclerotherapy, which close off unhealthy veins and help blood flow through healthy ones. This improves circulation and supports healing.
We also use compression therapy, like compression stockings or wraps, to control swelling and improve blood flow. For patients with active wounds, we can refer you to wound care specialists for advanced treatments like special dressings, cleaning of the wound, and other therapies. Along with these medical treatments, making lifestyle changes—like elevating your legs, staying active, and managing your weight—can improve healing and help prevent future ulcers.
